Slip-on water shoes are convenient when you change footwear repeatedly or want a small pair to tuck into a bag. Their main tradeoff is adjustment: many rely entirely on the collar and upper to hold the foot. Check that easy entry does not come with a loose heel.

Put the shoe on without pulling excessively on the heel tab. A very tight opening can be awkward with damp feet, while a generous opening may let the heel lift. The useful middle ground is a collar you can manage that settles comfortably once the shoe is on.
Walk, rise onto your toes, and gently change direction on a clean surface. If you have to curl your toes to keep the shoe in place, try another fit or a model with adjustment.
For a brief poolside change, a simple slip-on can be practical. On a rocky entry or a trip that involves repeated pulling forces, such as extracting your foot from soft mud, fit becomes especially important. A strap or lacing system gives you more control than stretch alone.
Some slip-on designs include a heel strap or an adjustable collar. Examine how that component works rather than judging the shoe only by whether it has traditional laces.
Check the interior padding and whether the liner stays flat when removing the shoe. A compact pair that bunches underfoot can be frustrating during repeated changes. For travel, also think about where you will dry the shoes overnight. Open them fully after use and avoid sealing a damp pair in a bag longer than necessary. Choose a walking shoe separately if most of the itinerary is on dry pavement.
