The label covers several different features
A broad toe box, low sole, flexible construction, and zero heel-to-toe drop are separate design choices. A product may have some without having all of them. If one feature is essential to you, look for an explicit model specification rather than relying on the word barefoot.
Bend and inspect a pair when it arrives. Consider how much you want to feel pebbles and uneven ground. A sole that packs almost flat can be convenient for travel yet feel less comfortable on a long stony approach.
Toe space should not mean a loose midfoot
Allow the toes to rest naturally while checking that the heel and instep remain secure. A wide front does not help if the whole shoe rotates around your foot. Adjustable laces or a strap can be useful when your forefoot and heel require different amounts of room.
Do not substitute extra length for the toe shape you want. Compare the outline of the sole with your foot and use the maker’s sizing chart.
Choose the outing with the sole in mind
For pool entries or short beach walks, a light design may be all you want. Rough trails and extended dry walking deserve a separate comfort check. If you normally wear substantially cushioned shoes, start with a short outing before committing to a full day. Keep a familiar pair available if the minimalist shoe is uncomfortable; there is no need to force a preference that does not suit you.
